An hour later, Remington pulled up to Winter’s townhouse in west Charlotte’s historic Enderly Park neighborhood. He was amazed at the changes in the area, gentrification at its best and worst. He parked behind her Mustang and grinned. Clearly, he had the superior muscle car, he thought as he locked his Challenger. The porch light flickered on as he headed up to the front door. He raised his hand to knock on the door when Winter opened it.

She’d changed out of the shorts. Damn. He drank in her image in a snug fitting tank top and a pair of leggings. “Hi,” she said then stepped aside for him to enter.

“Nice place,” he said as he looked around the living room. She’d decorated the place with a brown and tan sectional, taupe wallpaper, and a 52-inch TV hanging on the wall.

His eyes were drawn to a red painting on the wall above the sofa. Flames, falling rocks, and a woman holding an umbrella to keep everything at bay.

“That is a powerful image.”

Winter chuckled. “Des thought this was me and gave it to me for Christmas three years ago.”

“You friend knows you very well.”

She rolled her eyes. “You have two sleeping choices. You can take this sofa or the one in my den, which is a lot more comfortable.”

“Lead me to comfort.”

She pointed toward the stairs, and they headed down to the basement. Winter’s den would’ve been the perfect man cave, but Remington knew better than to make that observation out loud.

“This is a really cool spot down here,” he said as he looked around the room. He had to admit that she had a thing for big TVs. She had a 72-inch screen TV in the den and a couple of turntables. “What kind of albums do you play down here?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” she quipped. Winter crossed over to the stereo. “I’ve always loved this neighborhood.”

“Really? Why?”

“I had an internship in college at one of the churches here that worked with kids. It was a totally different place back then.”

“I can imagine. Seems like a lot of these neighborhoods have changed from what they were back in the day to now.”

She nodded. “That’s why I wanted to buy some property here so I could have an anchor here. One of the things I learned at Johnson C. Smith was that community is important. You need to see the people you aspire to be living around the corner and down the street from you.”

“You take on a lot of burdens that don’t belong to you.”

Winter rolled her eyes. “Let me guess, you grew up in a perfect family who didn’t have the real world knocking at their front door.”

“Wouldn’t go that far, but I figured out a long time ago that I can’t be everything to everybody.”

“And I was taught that family and community were important. After my mother left, the church mothers and local teachers showed me how I could go on. We’re not doing this.”

Remington crossed over to her and placed his hand on her shoulder.
